When he finished speaking to Ramsay on the telephone Palfrey pondered for a few minutes, and then picked up the telephone again, this time dialling Whitehall 1212. Superintendent Winship was a difficult man to get for most people, but was on the line very quickly to speak to Palfrey.

“You know Vardi’s at Richmond, don’t you?” asked Palfrey.

“Yes,” said Winship.

“And Mahommed Ali?”

“He’s still here – protesting vigorously,” said Winship. “He’s the only one of the twenty-two we picked up who’s said a word.”

“Oh,” said Palfrey. “Nothing at all out of the others?”

“Nothing.” Winship sounded even gruffer than usual. “They’re nearly all the same – I can handle our own rogues, but these Indians – nothing will make ‘em talk. If we could use the rack and the thumbscrew I don’t think they’d come across.”

“Maybe you’re right,” said Palfrey. “I think I’ll see Mahommed Ali. I’ll come over.”
